Studio to Street Photography in NYC

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a dear fellow photographer friend who was visiting New York City — during this crazy heatwave. She had asked for a headshot session, but as we navigated the city together, our session evolved into something much more dynamic and memorable. Our adventure was planned for the studio, but soon spilled out into the exciting streets of the city, capturing grittier, more candid moments that better reflect the essence of Manhattan. These were incredibly brief moments due to the heat but still so much fun!

The Studio Session

Our time in the studio was focused on headshots and portraits. My friend had come prepared with one colorful outfit, but to provide her with more variety since we had a little extra time in the studio, I literally gave her the button-up shirt off my own back! Ha! This impromptu wardrobe change added a fresh look to the photos and showcased her versatility. The studio environment allowed us to create polished and professional images that she could use for various purposes, from business profiles to personal branding.

Embracing the In-Between Moments

One of the aspects I love most about these sessions are the in-between shots – those brief moments when my subjects are relaxed and unguarded. Often, these are captured when they’re resting between poses, sometimes with their eyes closed, lost in thought or simply enjoying the moment. There is a raw, honest beauty in these images that speaks to me, revealing a deeper layer of my subjects’ personalities.

Street Style and Graffiti Walls

On our way to the studio, we stumbled upon an incredible graffiti wall that we couldn't resist using as a backdrop. The vibrant colors and intricate designs provided a stark contrast to the clean lines of the studio shots. This street style photography session was spontaneous and fun, capturing my friend in a more relaxed and candid element. The graffiti wall added an edgy, urban feel to the photos, highlighting the artistic and diverse spirit of New York City.

Little Italy Charm

After our studio time, we wandered over to Little Italy near the studio and found a charming Italian restaurant to cool off in. The quaint atmosphere and picturesque surroundings offered the perfect setting for more candid shots. As my friend enjoyed a sparkling beverage and was lost in thought while enjoying observing our surroundings, I snapped a few shots, capturing her in natural, unposed moments. These photos have a vibe of authenticity, making them a wonderful memento of her time in the city.
