A Sea of Transparency

For while now, I have found myself contemplating what we share on social media and how we engage (or not) with it all. Have we perhaps divulged too much of ourselves to the point where our curiosity for one another has lessened? It sometimes seems that the unveiling of our lives on these platforms has left little room for mystery and the beauty of personally getting to know and understand our fellow human beings.

Nowadays, our profiles and posts lay bare our entire lives, leaving little left to discover about one another. This saturation of information can sometimes lead to a sense of emptiness, as the allure of curiosity and exploration fades away.

Do we even need to personally communicate with each other at all now? Ask questions? Dive deeper into people’s other channels of communicating? Or just what’s easiest?  Just glancing at their posts as we mindlessly scroll by? Do we even engage with them there as often now? Do we even want to be on display this way anymore? Do we feel we have to in an effort to stay visible and relevant? Do we all have to try to be influencers now?

Amidst this sea of transparency, I find myself yearning for the mysterious nature of human interactions that we used to have. There is something captivating about the unknown, the untold stories and the uncharted territories of one's being. It is in the quest for these hidden treasures that true connection and understanding can thrive. It’s why I find chance encounters with strangers in real life so delightful.

I have chosen to be more private about some things that are dear to me on these platforms for awhile now, especially when they pertain to the people in my life that I care about. I’ve been trying to post more about life and experiences in general, leaving space for real communication with friends when they show curiosity about me, usually inquiring why I’m not sharing certain things. This has prompted some interesting private conversations for me.

Anyway, this is just something I’ve been pondering lately. Maybe it’s something you think about, too.
